Coffee cup, Seth Pennington, c.1780

This Pennington coffee cup is beautifully painted with a floral bouquet and sprays in rich, colourful enamels. The inside rim is decorated with a trellised pink border. John Pennington is known to have used this pattern, however, the glaze and potting of this cup suggests a strong Seth Pennington attribution. A documentary teapot inscribed 'Mary Sharples Lodge 1783' is painted in the same attractive manner, as is a 'Chelsea' ewer attributed to Seth Pennington.

In addition to offering the collector a wide variety of decorative styles and shapes, the Liverpool factories of the late 18th Century still present so many intriguing problems with regard to attribution.

This piece would enhance any collection of early English porcelain.

Condition: Excellent - no chips, cracks or restoration. The painted decoration is wonderfully colourful and detailed.

Dimensions: Height 2 1/2" (6.3cm)
