Coffee cup, Worcester, soft paste porcelain, c.1770

This coffee cup is attractively painted in the Gentleman's or Rich Mandarin style. The oval reserve on one side shows a woman and child, and the reverse is painted with a man, probably a scholar, beside a console table on which stands a vase of flowers. The reserves are surrounded by gilt scrolls and cartouches containing foliage painted in black and red. The pattern is probably a copy of a Qianlong teaware pattern.

Grooved handle. Unmarked.

Condition: Two sections from rim cleanly re-stuck. Two filled rim chips visible on the inside. The enamels are in good condition, with only slight wear. An original fault occurred when the cup touched something in the kiln during the first firing, the resulting glaze blemish having been subsequently decorated.

Dimensions: Height 2 1/2" (6.4cm)
