Delftware Platter, Liverpool or Dublin, c.1765

This delftware octagonal platter is freely painted with a reversed version of La Pêche, however, although the figures are undeniably European, and the scene reflecting the chinoiserie taste in every way, the painting of the figures in a landscape is reminiscent of both English and European delftwares decorated in the Ming Transitional style during the late 17th century. The complex border designs emulate a variety of Chinese patterns.

Condition: No restoration, just typical wear to the brittle tin glaze and a faint hairline from the rim.

Dimensions: Length 33.5 cm

Delftware: The Tin-glazed Earthenware of the British Isles, Michael Archer (V&A/HMSO, 1997).

English Delftware, F.H. Garner and Michael Archer (Faber & Faber, 1972).
