Rare Small Mug, Worcester, soft paste porcelain, c.1760

 

Transfer-printed over the glaze in black with a bust of the Marquess of Granby, from an engraving by Robert Hancock, after a portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds (pictured). The popular military hero Lieutenant-General John Manners (1721-1770) rests on victory laurel and palms, flanked by Fame blowing a trumpet and bearing a laurel branch, and the warlike goddess Minerva seated on a cloud.

Granby served in the Seven Years' War as overall commander of the British troops on the battlefield.

Provenance: The Walton Temple Collection.

Condition: Excellent - no chips, cracks or restoration. The prints are good and clear.
