Cane Handle, Saint-Cloud, soft paste porcelain, c.1720-40

The top of this Saint-cloud porcelain cane handle, with its bulbous, pommel form, is finely painted in underglaze blue with Bérainesque pendant foliate ornaments above a band of cross-hatching. The silver or white metal collar with its decorative dentil edge is unmarked.

Condition: Excellent - no chips, cracks or restoration. The blue underglaze painting is very clear and of an attractive hue, and the soft paste porcelain has the admired cream-colour of Saint-Cloud. There are traces of animal glue and cork to the hollow interior.

Dimensions: Height (including mount) 4.6 cm

This is the largest of three Saint-Cloud cane handles currently in our inventory.
