A pearlware pottery Child’s Mug, English, circa 1830
This pearlware pottery child’s mug is unusually transfer printed in purple with a travelling knife grinder. Historically referred to as cart sharpeners, these itinerant craftsmen have plied a useful trade throughout Europe since the Middle Ages, and often provided a picturesque subject for artists and caricaturists (see the final image). The sharpening of dulled knife and scissor blades has for centuries been associated with the Romani people.
Unmarked.
