A Danish Knife, 18th Century
Of pistol grip form, the porcelain haft is painted in red and green with a bird perched amongst trailing flowers. Fitted with a silver ferrule and a steel blade stamped WINGFIELD, ROWBOTHAM & CO TENTER STREET SHEFFIELD. This important Sheffield firm of cutlers was established in 1751.
Provenance: An English Private Collection.
Condition: There is a hairline extending from beneath the ferrule, and wear to the decoration and glaze, consistent with use. No restoration. The slightly tarnished blade would benefit from a light clean.
Dimensions: Length 21.3 cm (including blade)
Cutlery: From Gothic to Art Deco – The J. Hollander Collection, Jan van Trigt (Petraco-Pandora NV, 1999).
