A Lowestoft Stand, circa 1762
This rare stand to a butter a dish or ‘butter-pot’ is painted in underglaze blue with an oriental landscape. The border is painted with four small flowering prunus branches. The flat rim and cavetto are moulded with Hughes-type raised floral motifs.
Marked within the footrim with a painter’s numeral 5.
Provenance: Geoffrey Godden; this particular example is illustrated in his Illustrated Guide to Lowestoft Porcelain (plate 35, top).
Condition: Excellent – no damage or restoration, just typical glaze and firing imperfections.
