A pair of Kakiemon Dishes, Kakiemon kiln, Nangawara, Arita, Edo period, circa 1680-1700

Of moulded decagonal form with foliated rims, these handsome Kakiemon dishes are finely decorated with underglaze blue and onglaze blue, turquoise, red and black enamel colours and gold. Fruiting pomegranates, a spray of asters and a branch of plum blossom are arranged around a central underglaze blue stylised plum blossom motif (gobenka). The finely shaded underglaze blue border consists of alternate panels of bamboo and chrysanthemum among rocks, with onglaze red and gold. The upturned vertical rim has a fuchi-beni (‘lip rouge’) dark brown dressing. The underside is decorated in underglaze blue with karakusa scrolling foliage.

Spur marks are arranged around the centre of the base and the vertical foot rim is wiped free of glaze.

Fuku ‘happiness’ mark in double lined square (fuku mark No. 4 – Begg & McOwan).

The use of fine underglaze blue shading, gobenka motif, and black enamel outlines are signifiers for Kakiemon wares, particularly in conjunction with the upturned vertical rim. This particular fuku mark also occurs on Kakiemon porcelain.

Condition: Dish one – a section from the rim has been stapled and there is a minute chip to the rim. No other damage. Dish two – a crack across the centre has been stapled, although the crack does not extend to the rim. There are two small chips and a pinhead nick to the rim. A curved crack extends from the rim to the cavetto. No other damage.

Dimensions: Diameter 23.5 cm; Height 4.5 cm
