A Philip Christian Saucer, Liverpool, circa 1765-68

This Philip Christian saucer is attractively printed in black with the Rock Garden pattern in which a Watteauesque couple are seated in a shady garden grove, classical ruins just visible in the distance. The line, loop and dot border is painted in black enamel.

A teapot decorated in this pattern is illustrated by Hillis (plate 14.49).

Condition: Excellent – no chips, cracks or restoration. The printed and painted decoration is good, with no wear.
