A pink lustre pearlware pottery Teacup and Saucer, probably Staffordshire, circa 1830
This pearlware pottery teacup and saucer is decorated with a pink lustre house. The house is set in grounds and backed by trees, with smoke issuing from the chimney. In the foreground is a fence and a hedge. The scene is surrounded by a pink lustre band. The handle is of a double-scroll form with a thumb rest. The wonky pink lustre line painted around the outside of the cup certainly adds to the delightful folkish charm of these pieces.
The underside of the saucer is marked with a 2 in pink lustre.
Dimensions: Saucer – Diameter 14.5 cm; Cup – Height 5 cm.
Condition: There is a small chip to the foot rim of the cup, and a scratch to the inside rim. No other damage or restoration. Both pieces have small patches of crazing to the glaze, typical of pearlwares, and expected light wear from use. There are very minor manufacturing flaws including pinholes and stray touches of lustre.
