A rare and early Worcester Teapot, circa 1753-54

This extremely rare and early Worcester teapot with corrugated moulding is finely painted with a version of the Prunus Root pattern in orange-red and chestnut-brown.

With only a tiny handful of tea bowls and saucers of a slightly later date in the 1750s and painted in a single russet colour, including an example in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, and the Zorensky Collection of Worcester porcelain, this teapot represents the earliest and only recorded example of its type.

Provenance: The Crane Collection; an English Private Collection.

Condition: The enamel decoration is particularly fine and detailed. There are two flat chips to the outside of the rim and a crack extending from the larger chip down through the side and across the base. There are also tiny chips to the spout tip and a crack through the handle above the lower terminal. Some kiln dust to the interior base. Lacking cover. No restoration.

Dimensions: Height 8.9 cm

Worcester Porcelain 1751-1790: The Zorensky Collection, Simon Spero & John Sandon (Antique Collectors’ Club, 1996).

Ref. For a later tea bowl and saucer decorated in a single russet colour, see Zorensky, fig. 129.
