Bowl, probably Richard Chaffers, circa 1762-65
Probably from the Richard Chaffers manufactory and made of steatitic porcelain, this Liverpool bowl is beautifully painted in the Chinese idiom with a long tailed bird perched on a flowering peony branch. The reverse is painted with two butterflies. The red, green turquoise and brown palette is most attractive and some of the bronze-brown leaves are picked out with fine gilt details.
Provenance: The Crane Collection; an English Private Collection.
Condition: No chips, cracks or restoration. The enamel decoration to the outside of the bowl is in excellent order. There is wear to the gilt line rim and surface wear to the interior from use. The rim is slightly misshapen from production.
