A Sussex pottery Money Box, English, first half of the 19th century

Made of red clay, this lead-glazed Sussex pottery money box has an acorn-type finial and simple incised concentric decoration. The russet-brown, iron-flecked body is typical of wares produced by potters working in the south-eastern English historic county of Sussex.

With its jaunty coin slot and tactile shape, this money box represents a charming example of country or vernacular pottery, that is regional pottery made by an individual potter for the local inhabitants.

Condition: Good – no cracks or restoration, just a few typical blemishes and tiny losses to the edge of the unglazed base. There are expected impurities and minor anomalies to the potting, glazing and firing, such as small pieces of grit and glaze crawl. The unglazed areas around the foot have taken on a wonderful dark patina from handling.

Dimensions: Height 13.5 cm
