Two pairs of Meiji Japanese Vases, late 19th century
Dating from the Meiji period, these four Imari trumpet-shaped porcelain vases are decorated in underglaze blue, overglaze red and gilt. One pair has ribbed moulding and is decorated with prunus blossom; the other pair is decorated with vases filled with flowers on a checkered floor.
The vases are of an attractive small size – the tallest being only 16 cm high – perfect for displaying as a garniture above a fireplace. Vases such as these would have satisfied a demand for fashionable japonisme in European and American interiors during the last quarter of the 19th century.
Provenance: The Ian and Antonia Macpherson Collection, Old Hall, Blofield, Norfolk.
Condition: No damage or restoration. The enamel and gilt decoration is generally in good order with only minor wear in places, the vase on the left of photo 1 having slightly more wear to the red enamel. The pair to this vase (on the right) has some light crazing to the glaze, visible on the base. The four vases display beautifully.
Dimensions: Height of tallest vase 16 cm
