A Worcester Teacup and Saucer, circa 1770
This delightful teacup and saucer is decorated in Worcester’s rich Kakiemon style. The design perfectly combines a taste for oriental decoration with a fashionable European aesthetic.
The pattern consists of ornate vase and mirror-shaped panels reserved on a blue scale ground. These panels contain finely-painted oriental garden scenes, including the so-called ‘banded hedge’, and fantastical flowers and foliage, all in the Japanese Kakiemon idiom, whilst each Rococo cartouche is outlined in gilt, reflecting the taste for contemporary French decorative arts. The handle is picked out with a design in red enamel.
Square seal marks.
Condition: Excellent – no chips, cracks or restoration, and with only light surface wear from use.
