A Worcester Chrysanthemum pattern Coffee Cup and Saucer, circa 1765-68
This Worcester coffee cup and saucer are decorated with the Chrysanthemum pattern. Both pieces are ornately moulded with three different flower heads and trailing foliage. The centre of the saucer is painted in underglaze blue with a single chrysanthemum flower, and the petals of this flower also surround the base of the cup. The border is derived from the early Eighteenth-Century French lambrequins, such as the decoration found on Rouen faience and Saint-Cloud porcelain.
An open crescent mark to both pieces.
Condition: No cracks or restoration, just a tiny nick to the saucer foot rim. From manufacture, there is some very light kiln dust within the glaze on the saucer, and small specks and patches of the cobalt blue on both pieces ran during the firing process.
Dimensions: Saucer – Diameter 12 cm; Cup – Height 6 cm
