An extremely rare Worcester Jardinière Stand, circa 1765-68

An extremely rare, possibly unique, octagonal stand for a jardinière, finely painted in Rich Japan style with chrysanthemums, scattered sprigs and sprays, and flying insects. Bands of gold flowerheads are reserved on dense iron-red scrollwork and further flower sprigs, all below a gold scalloped rim with feathered edge. The design includes elements of the Worcester Phoenix pattern.

Jardinières are rarely found in Worcester porcelain, possibly because they were difficult to fire. The shape is often distorted and blue and white examples can be blurred. The jardinière that would have accompanied this stand was sold at Bonhams, London, 6 June, 2007, lot 269 (£4,800).

A blue and white jardinière in the Worcester Porcelain Museum, together with a waster of an accompanying stand, was illustrated by Henry Sandon, Worcester Porcelain, colour plate 1.

Refs. The Henry Rissik Marshall Collection at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, includes a Chelsea sauce tureen stand with similar decoration, circa 1752-58 (accession number WA1957.24.1.206), and it is indeed likely that Worcester derived inspiration from Chelsea.
